사용자 에이전트(User Agent)라는 용어가 반드시 월드 와이드 웹(World Wide Web)을 사용하는 클라이언트에만 국한되어 사용하는 말은 아니지만, 최근에는 특별한 설명이 없으면 웹 서핑에 사용하는 웹 브라우저에 대한 정보 정도의 의미로 이해할 수 있다.

우리가 어떤 웹 사이트에 접속할 때, 알아서 한국어 페이지를 보여주거나, 알아서 특정 브라우저에 특화된 페이지를 보여주는 경우가 있는데, 그것은 해당 웹 사이트에서 우리가 접속하고 있는 웹 서핑 환경을 읽어내 그것을 활용하기 때문이고, 이 정보를 사용자 에이전트라고 하는 것이다. 그래서 아이폰(iPhone)의 사파리와 PC의 사파리에서 같은 URL을 입력해도 다른 화면이 나온다.

어떤 웹 사이트에 접속할 때 자신이 사용하고 있는 클라이언트 정보가 어떻게 그곳으로 전송되고 있는지를 확인하고 싶다면 사용하는 웹 브라우저를 열고 다음 사이트로 접속해 본다.

접속하는 순간 내 사용자 에이전트를 확인할 수 있다.

다음은 내가 주 브라우저로 사용하고 있는 ChromePlus 1.4.1.0 알파 1에서 확인한 결과이다. IE 모드가 아니라 Chromium(크로뮴) 모드이다.


다음은 Chromium에서 확인한 것이다. ChromePlus보다 높은 버전임을 알 수 있다. 운영 체제에 대한 정보는 같다.


다음은 Internet Explorer(인터넷 익스플로러) 8.0 버전이다. 상당히 많은 정보가 날아간다.

다음은 내가 ChromePlus 이전에 주 브라우저로 사용했던 Maxthon Browser이다. 현재도 사용은 하고 있다.


아주 간단하다. 그리고 Maxthon은 설정 페이지에서 이 User Agent를 내 마음대로 바꿔 사용할 수 있게 해준다.


해당 메뉴에서 원하는 사용자 에이전트를 고르거나, 새로 입력해주면 된다.

예를 들어, 사용자 에이전트를 "Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone)"과 같이 입력해, 주소 표시줄에 "naver.com "을 입력하면 아래 그림과 같이 자동으로 "m.naver.com "으로 접속된다. 웹 사이트에서 아이폰으로 접속한 것으로 알기 때문이다.


이런 방법을 사용하면 원래 아이폰 등 특정 장치나 브라우저로만 접속되는 사이트도 대부분 불편없이 이용할 수 있다.

인터넷 익스플로러(IE) 기반의 탭 브라우저로 유명한 Maxthon이 그동안 알파 버전 형태로 진행하던 Maxthon 3 새 버전을 2010년 4월 23일에 베타로 공식 출시했고, 5월 13일에 업데이트인 3.0.10.11 베타 버전을 내놓았다.

3.0 버전이 2.0 버전과 다른 가장 큰 특징은 IE뿐만 아니라 Webkit 기반의 브라우징 엔진을 얹어서 다중 브라우저로 탈바꿈한 것이다. 자기들은 이것을 "Hybrid Display Engine"이라고 부른다. 예를 들면, 구글 크롬과 익스플로러를 한 브라우저로 쓴다고 보면 된다.

한편, 2월 26일자로는 현재 내부적으로 개발되고 있는 3.0.6.32 Alpha 버전도 공개되었다. 이 버전은 크롬플러스(ChromePlus) 처럼 인터넷 익스플로러(IE)와 크롬(정확하게는 크롬이 아니라 그 기반이 되는 WebKit 엔진)을 동시에 결합한 것이다.
