탭 브라우저로 유명한 Maxthon 이 두 차례의 베타 버전을 거쳐 10월 15일에 2.5.9 최종 버전을 내놓았다.

두 번째 베타 이후 이번 버전에서 달라진 점은 아래와 같다.

현재 버전은 최근 언제인가부터 웹 브라우저 본문으로 마우스 포커스를 가져오지 못하는 등 사소하지만 중요한 몇 가지 문제를 보이고 있고, 아직 해결되지 않고 있다. 상황에 따라 다르기는 한 것 같지만, 문제는 문제다. 이런 문제가 깔끔하게 해결되지 않는다면, 많은 사용자를 잃을 가능성도 있다.

이번에 개선된 점은 아래와 같다.

최근 나름대로 인지도를 높여가고 있는 구글의 웹 브라우저인 크롬(Chrome) 의 개발(dev) 버전에 부가 기능을 넣어 사용할 수 있는 확장(extension)을 모아 관리하는 별도의 메뉴가 추가되었다. 이 확장 관리 메뉴를 보려면 주소 입력창에 "chrome://extensions"을 입력하고 접속하면 된다.


크롬의 오픈 소스 프로젝트인 크로뮴(Chromium) 에서도 마찬가지이다.

내가 기본 브라우저로 사용 중인 Maxthon Browser 는 현재 2.5.9.2122 버전이 최신이다. Maxthon Browser 2 버전은 2.0.1.1276 버전부터 시작했는데 아래 링크를 이용하면, 이후 발표된 모든 개별 빌드 목록을 확인할 수 있고, 각 설치 파일을 바로 내려받을 수 있다.

인터넷을 서핑하기 위해 내가 주로 사용하는 웹 브라우저는 Maxthon Browser이다 . 다른 온갖 브라우저도 다 쓰고 있지만, 아직은 이게 잘 낫기는 하다.

현재 최신 버전은 2.5.9이며 베타 버전 이다. 그런데 꽤 오래전부터 차기 버전인 Maxthon Browser 3 에 대한 알파 버전이 시험 중에 있다. 알파(Alpha)라는 이름에서 알 수 있듯이, 아직 상당히 미흡한 점이 많고, 제대로 메뉴나 도구 모음도 갖추어져 있지 않다. 그래도 인터넷 익스플로러(IE)를 기본 엔진으로 한 이전 버전과는 달리 신규 버전은 WebKit을 기본 엔진으로 하면서, 필요에 따라 IE로 페이지를 전환해 사용할 수 있게 해준다.

이런 이유 때문에라도 무척 기대가 되는 웹 브라우저이다. 아직 모든 기능이 제대로 구현되지 않아 그렇겠지만, 속도도 빠르고 부드럽다. 그렇다고 해도 알파 버전의 특성상 많이 부분이 실험 단계에 있고, 안정화와는 거리가 멀기 때문에 "막" 사용하기에는 부담이 크다. 그래서인지, 이 브라우저를 설치한 후, 자체 메뉴는 물론이고, Windows의 [기본 프로그램] 메뉴를 통해서도 '기본 브라우저'로 설정할 수 없다. 아예 기본 브라우저로 사용하지 말 것을 권장하고 있기 때문이다.

레지스트리를 직접 편집하는 방법도 있지만, 이외로 쉽게 이 작업을 할 수 있다. 바로 설치 단계에서 가능하다. Maxthon Browser 3를 설치하는 과정에서 아래 그림과 같이 [Customize...] 메뉴로 들어가 "Set As Default Browser"를 선택하면 된다.


이미 설치되어 있는 경우라도 다시 설치하면서 선택하면 된다. 미리 밝혔지만, 특별한 경우라면 아직 기본 브라우저로 사용하는 것은 권장하지 않는다.
