온라인 백과사전인 위키피디아(Wikipedia) 는 이제 이 분야의 대명사가 되었다 해도 과언이 아니다. 중요한 참고 자료의 역할을 하고는 있지만 문제는 인터넷에 연결이 되어 있지 않으면 사용할 수 없다는 것이다. 이를 해결하기 위해 몇 가지 방법들이 나와 있고, 관련 글들을 몇 차례 소개한 적도 있다.

이번에 소개하는 WikiTaxi는 유사한 다른 프로그램 중 비교적 위키피디아 전체를 쉽게 받아 사용할 수 있도록 해주는 무료 프로그램이다. 일단 위키피디아에서 제공하는 일종의 백업 파일인 덤프 파일을 받아서 전용 데이터베이스로 변환한 다음 이 프로그램에서 검색하는 방식이다.

프로그램은 설치하지 않고 적당한 폴더에 넣어 실행하면 된다.

백과사전 파일은 자신이 직접 만들어서 사용해야 한다. 다음 링크에서 최신의 덤프 파일을 우선 내려받는다.

• 영문 전체 (약 4GB)
• 한글판 (약 68MB). 이 페이지에서 "kowiki" 링크를 찾아 들어가면 된다.

각 페이지에 있는 여러 파일 중 최신 날짜의 폴더 안에 있는 "pages-articles.xml.bz2"라는 이름의 링크를 클릭하면 덤프 파일을 내려받을 수 있다. 내려받은 파일은 프로그램 폴더에 있는 "WikiTaxi_Importer.exe"를 이용해 전용 데이터베이스 파일로 변환해주면 된다.



축소판이 아닌 영문 전체 파일은 대략 반나절 정도가 걸린다. 덤프 파일의 크기는 3.89GB이고, 변환한 후에 만들어지는 파일(확장자 taxi)는 6.76GB가 된다. 한글의 경우는 각각 65.2MB, 142MB이다. 혹시 한글 데이터베이스(2008년 7월 31일자)가 필요하면 아래에서 내려받아 사용하면 된다. 단, 한글 검색 기능이 제대로 작동하지 않는다.

You know Google book search exists, but have you tried citing from those books. Often, I had to produce a write-up, essay or the last-minute paper for a conference. When I dotn have enough time to pull out a strong reference from books, I issue a Google book search, up comes the results from book with snippets view showing paragraphs and texts that I were exactly looking for. I paraphrase them and correctly reference them. Neat hack.

3. Book Finder



If you are looking for any kind of book, whether it is rare or out-of-print, specific edition - You will find it at Bookfinder . Over 125 millions book titles to search, you can actually buy new and old-books from this site. They achieve by doing a search through every major catalog available online.

4. Free Note-taking



Mynoteit is a web service that you need to manage all writing works at uni. With mynoteit, you can upload office documents, scanned notes and audio lectures at one place. You can access them at will with even with your mobile. You can join groups of students who are taking the similar subject all over the world. You can bookmark your assignment dates, deadlines at one place.

5. Re"Search Engine"



Scirus is a popular search engine among research community. Scirus searches for scientific information with its comprehensive trusted network of article bases like Science Direct, PubMed and other journal databases. The results are highly relevant and you can choose the keywords used by authors to search for relevant scientific domain. You get the results in three categories, journal results, preferred web results and web results. If you try Scirus once, you will stick to it. It saved me lot of my research time.

6. Digital Theses Networks



Australia is probably, the only country where every research student is asked to deposit a digital copy of their theses to a national database for a common cause. The Australasian Digital Theses Program is very popular among the researchers as every university in Australia is participating in it. A similar initiative is being carried out at the international level, which is PhDData.org - a 5 year old program which aims to collect the research theses from the universities around the world. There is also another initiative named "Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations " that looks promising as well.

7. Bibliography made easy



It's a pain to follow the style guide of various journal styles when you are writing a paper. Tools such as EndNote help in maintaining your database of references. If you are looking for an online tool, then Ottobib is a really useful. You can store, organize your references, and Ottobib will format it to a style when you need. There is another web service that does a similar job , which is Easybib .

8. Job portals for researchers



Monster has a special site Phd jobs that lists research oriented jobs. There are sites where you can find Policy jobs , Political jobs , Ethical jobs , Market Research jobs , Museum jobs , PostDoc jobs , Law jobs and Human Rights jobs . All these sites provide world-wide listings of opportunities specific to researchers.

9. Docs, Spreadsheets and Presentations



The benefits of Google Docs are obvious, you can maintain your documents and edit on the run. Particularly useful when you are traveling for field visits and you do not have access to your favourite Desktop Office applications. I used to upload a copy of my thesis chapters in Google Docs and share it with my supervisor. He would comment and add suggestions. If you are thinking of developing a document with your peer researchers - across boundaries, you have to use this. No more copying drafts, final versions and confusions on which one is what. With the added spreadsheets and presentations, it is a cool collection of tools for storing documents on the move.

10. List Sharing



Tadalist is about having a to-do list on the web. You can share between your supervisors to track your progress and communicate with your fellow researchers to meet the research deadlines or to organise a holiday.

11. Phd Comics



We are researchers, so what. We need fun, right? I have seen no other humour site that caters exclusive to researchers and PhD students life. PhDComics is awesome because, the site was started by a student and has plenty of cartoon strips on any conceivable aspect of Phd life.

12. Tracks almost everything



An easy way to track all the favourite blogs / research web sites in my subject is to use Google Reader . I use the ‘Star’ function to mark the essential posts, and use them later. A thousand eyes are looking for me and blogging things that are important and I follow them at one place with my reader. Great help ? is it not?

13. ResearchChannel



Research channel is a site that offers videos on various research topics. Research Channel functions as a nonprofit media company with a mission to connect the world research community with latest developments, insights and discoveries across the globe. Anyone can watch the videos for free. But, if you are a researcher or research organisation who wish to contribute video content, you have to apply for a membership to the research channel. 14. Wikipedia



Often, the power of Wikipedia is grossly under-rated by the research people, who dismiss it based on the credibility. Well, that is an acceptable fact but from Wikipedia, you will get to know about a human view of a topic. You may get to know the latest happenings or the first hand information on a cutting-edge technology in your field (equivalent of gossips in the film industry).

15. MIT Web



Massachusetts institute of technology maintains a comprehensive web portal on the current research happenings at MIT and covers news and research events that affect humanity. The research covers any conceivable topic under various categories .

16. Eduforge - Free software for education



Just what Sourcefourge did for a programming and application development, eduforge does it for research community. It provides a free, open access to share ideas, form collaborative research groups, content and software development to solve specific research problems.

17. SuTree - Watch and learn



SuTree is a YouTube style video site for Do-It-Yourself projects. You can watch videos and learn rather than reading plain texts and procedures. You can learn something new, every day. SuTree does not host your videos, users host them on youtube or Google videos and provide a link and embed the videos here. These videos are voted by the community and the editors hand-pick them and monitor to keep the scum out of the site.

18. Wridea - Free ideas



Wridea is the place where ideas get into shape. You can record your ideas, browse others' ideas, rate them, improve them and what not. The design and performance of the site is awesome and you can create unlimited pages for free. Liberate your ideas and watch them grow.

19. World Lecture Hall



World Lecture Hall is the place where you can find course materials developed by the teaching faculty around the world in almost any language. Some courses are only available online, but most of them can be downloaded for offline use. It is a great collection of lectures - a good bookmark.

20. University Channel



University Channel is another directory of lectures (videos, audio and text presentations) developed and hosted by Princeton university. it not only lists the academic lectures and presentations, but also some of the key public affairs lectures, panel discussions and events from the best industrial conferences and academic institutions all over the world.

You have to experience Backpackit to believe it - this site will be tremendously helpful for keeping track of your research developments. You can track your tasks, references (who said what - over phone / email), appointments, action items etc. If you are looking for an efficient organizing tool, this is the one for you.

If you are looking for a tool to create and organize your thoughts and ideas, mind maps are the best way. With freemind - a java based open source program, you can develop complex yet, easy to organize mindmaps.

24. Free Newspaper Archive



Paper of Record is the largest newspaper archive on the web. You can get snapshots of news articles from leading newspapers of the world from pre-1600 era to the current date. You can search through the archive and download the clips as images (gif). You have a quota of 250 mb every day.

25. Citations Database



Refbase is the place where people are sharing their citations and organising them at one place. You can download a copy of the refbase on your PC and connect to the server periodically to update them. Also try CiteSeer for searching through millions of citations.

요즘 독도 문제가 중요한 이슈 중 하나로 떠올랐다. 어제 오늘의 이야기가 아닌데 고유가에 대처한다고 21세기 이 시점에 홀짝제나 생각해내는 것만큼이나 이 나라나 시스템이 답답하기도 하다.

오늘 SBS 8시 뉴스에 보도된 독도 관련 기사 중 재미있는 것이 하나 있었다. TV 뉴스지만 편의상 네이버에 실린 원고 를 따왔다.

인터넷 백과사전인 위키피디아(Wikipedia)가 일본 네티즌의 끈질긴 여론 공세로 이들의 의견을 수용하고 있다는 기사이다. 그런데 이 위키피디아의 내용이라는 것이 잘 알려진 바와 같이 아무나 고치면 되는 것이다. 단지 누구 더 열심히 가필하고 수정하느냐의 문제만 있을 뿐이다. 잘못된 내용인 것 같으면 내가 들어가서 바꾸면 된다. 어떻게 보면 불합리한 구조이다. 만약 그 구조의 문제로 우리가 또는 독도가 불리하다면 이를 기사화하는 것이 더 좋지 않았을까 한다.

사용자들이 만드는 온라인 백과사전인 Wikipedia(위키피디아) 는 분량이 방대하고 수시로 내용이 바뀌기 때문에 일정 시점의 내용을 저장하거나 인쇄하여 보관하는 일은 의미가 없어 보인다. 그래도 몇 가지 이유로 종이나 파일로 인쇄해야 하는 일이 있다. 그래서 Lexisum 이라는 사이트가 있는데 위키피디아 원래의 내용에서 군더더기를 빼고 깔끔하게 정리해 주는 서비스를 제공한다.

화면으로 보는 Visual Mode와 각종 사이즈의 용지에 인쇄할 수 있도록 해주는 Printing Mode 두 가지가 있다.

본문 전체를 정리해 주는 것은 아니고 목차(Contents) 이전까지 요약 부분에 해당하는 앞부분만 정리해 보여 준다. 또 본문에 삽입된 표나 그림을 모두 생략한다. 간단하게 개요 정도를 정리할 때 유용하다. 실제로 인쇄하면 대략 다음과 같은 모양이 된다.

사실 위키피디아의 특정 항목을 인쇄하면 각종 메뉴나 편집 링크 등도 같이 인쇄가 될 것 같지만 그렇지는 않다. "Korea" 항목을 검색하면 웹 브라우저에서는 일단 아래와 같이 보인다.

메뉴와 같은 군더더기를 없애고 본문 내용만 보려면 왼쪽 메뉴 목록에서 "Printable version"을 선택하면 된다.

이렇게 하면 실제 본문 내용만 나타난다. 이 내용을 인쇄하면 아래와 같이 본문 내용을 깔끔하게 인쇄할 수 있다.

화면에서 보는 "Printable version"보다 더 깔끔하게 인쇄된다. 물론 표나 그림도 다 나온다. 인쇄를 할 때에는 굳이 "Printable version"으로 들어갈 필요없이 해당 항목이 나타나는 일반 화면에서 인쇄를 해도 된다.

그래서 용도에 따라 다르기는 하겠지만, 종이로 인쇄할 때나 PDF 등 파일로 인쇄할 때나 위에 소개한 Lexisum보다 그냥 웹 브라우저에서 인쇄 기능을 사용할 것을 권장한다.

사용자들이 함께 만들어 사용하는 무료 온라인 백과사전으로 유명한 위키피디아(Wikipedia)는 이제 제법 많이 알려져 활용하는 이가 많은 것으로 보인다. 온라인 백과사전이기 때문에 오프라인에서도 사용하기 위해 전체 내용을 파일로 받아 사용하는 방법들도 몇 가지 소개한 바가 있다.

PediaPhon(피디아폰)은 백과사전의 각 항목을 아예 음성을 들을 수 있게 MP3 파일로 바꾸어 준다. 현재 영어, 독일어, 프랑스 어(불어) 버전을 지원한다.

MP3 파일로 바꾸고 싶은 항목(단어)을 입력하여 변환 단추를 누르면 실시간으로 MP3 파일로 바꿔 다운로드할 수 있게 링크를 제공한다. 이 파일은 PC에서도 들을 수 있지만 MP3 플레이어나 PDA, 아이팟(iPod) 등에서도 활용할 수 있다.

다음은 Blog 항목 을 MP3로 바꾼 것이다.


이 항목의 경우 파일 크기가 12MB 정도가 된다. (여기서 위 파일을 재생하면 무슨 이유에서인지 재생 속도가 빨라진다. 다음 파일을 들어봐도 된다.)

음성을 들어보면 알겠지만 사실 무용지물에 가깝다. 사실 필요한 경우 나는 아래와 같이 변환해서 사용하고 있었다.


직접 만들 때에는 한글(Korean) 음성도 가능하다.

이제는 온라인 백과사전의 대명사가 되어 버린 위키피디아(Wikipedia)는 방대한 양과 신속한 업데이트로 많은 인기를 누리고 있다. 태생적인 한계로 인한 단점이나 악영향들이 존재하기는 하지만 앞으로도 지속적인 인기를 누릴 것으로 보인다.

이 백과사전은 웹을 통해 서비스되기 때문에 일단 인터넷에 연결되어 있지 않으면 사용할 수 없다. 그래서 PC나 PDA 등에서 활용하기 위한 방법들이 예전부터 나타났다. 이와 관련해서 몇 가지 기사를 올리기도 했다.

그런데 문제는 사전의 양이 상당히 방대하기 때문에 사실 개인적인 용도로 내려쓰는 것은 거의 불가능에 가까워졌다는 것이다. 그래서 위와 같은 서비스들도 최신 버전의 데이터를 제공하기가 어려운 것으로 보인다.

위 기사 중 CD 버전(2006. 7. 9. )이 금년 5월에 업데이트되었다. 2006년판인 기존 버전은 200MB 내외의 사이즈였지만 2007년판은 792MB와 2.6GB 두 가지 버전으로 나왔다. 학생들에게 적합한 항목들만 추려서 만든 것으로 단순하게 HTML로 작성되었기 때문에 검색 기능은 없다. 메뉴나 링크를 따라 이동해야 한다. 전문가들이 학교 커리큘럼(영국 기준)에 맞게 추려서 만들었기 때문에 내용은 괜찮다고 할 수 있다. 그래도 좀 더 전문적이거나 세세한 항목에 대해선 아쉬움이 많다. 다음 링크를 이용하면 같은 내용을 웹에서 사용할 수 있다.

네티즌이 참여하여 만드는 인터넷 백과사전인 위키피디아(Wikipedia)는 사실 방대한 양 때문에 이제는 파일로 내려받기가 상당히 힘들게 되었다. 파일로 내려받으면 이를 PC나 PDA에 넣고 다니면서 오프라인 상태에서도 필요할 때마다 찾아볼 수 있는 이점이 있다. 내가 만들어 사용하는 파일 버전도 1G 정도의 분량 이후로 업데이트를 포기한 것이다.

그래서 CD 버전이 나오기도 했다.

비슷한 예로 애플(Apple)의 아이팟(iPod)에서도 위키피디아를 저장해 사용할 수 있도록 하는 프로그램이 있다. 다음 링크를 참조하여 설치하면 된다.

아이팟을 이동식 디스크로 인식하도록 설정한 후 내려받은 설치 프로그램을 실행하면 된다. 이후 백과사전 파일 을 다운로드하여 지정한 폴더에 복사해주면 된다. 현재 영어(1.7GB), 독일어(656MB), 이탈리아 어(228MB) 버전이 제공되고 있다. 6개월마다 갱신한다고 한다.



아직 모든 종류의 아이팟을 지원하지는 않는다. 비디오 기능이 있는 5세대에서도 사용할 수 없다. 설치 전에 FAQ 에서 확인할 필요가 있다.

위키마인드맵(WikiMindMap) 은 특정 키워드와 연결된 여러 주제를 온라인 백과사전은 위키피디아(Wikipedia) 에서 찾은 다음 마인드 맵(Mind Map) 형태로 연결해 보여 준다. 각 주제들은 위키피디아의 기사와 연결되어 있다. 영어, 독일어, 불어 등의 위키피디아를 사용할 수 있고 한글(Korean)은 아직 사용할 수 없다.

전 세계적으로 관심으로 끌고 있는 온라인 백과사전인 위키피디아(Wikipedia)는 사실 방대한 양때문에 오프라인으로 활용하기가 쉽지 않다. 그래서 작년 7월에 아래와 같은 글을 올리기도 했다.

그런데 최근 이 백과사전 사이트를 운영하는 위키미디어 재단(Wikimedia Foundation) 과 프랑스 회사인 린터웹(LinterWeb) 이 온라인에 있는 데이터를 추려 오프라인에서 활용할 수 있는 CD용 버전을 출시했다.


이 CD는 아래 사이트를 통해 구매할 수도 있고 여기에서 이미지 파일(.iso)을 다운로드할 수도 있다. 현재 버전은 0.5이다. 영문판만 있고 2천 개의 표제어를 골라 만들었다.

CD나 DVD에 구워 사용할 수도 있지만 하드 디스크에 폴더를 하나 만들고 그곳에 풀어 넣어 사용할 수도 있다.¹ 폴더에 풀어 넣어 사용할 때에는 프로그램 루트 폴더에서 "kiwix.exe" 파일을 실행하면 된다. 키윅(Kiwix)은 백과사전 검색 프로그램이다.

사용자들이 만드는 온라인 백과사전인 위키피디아(Wikipedia) 는 다양한 인터페이스로 사용할 수 있는 서비스들이 많다.

PDA 와 같이 제한된 디스플레이 영역에서도 깔끔하게 이 백과사전을 사용할 수 있는 서비스도 있다. 웹 서핑이 가능한 PDA 사용자는 즐겨찾기에 넣어두면 요긴하게 사용할 수 있다.

한글 버전은 아래 그림처럼 검색이 되지는 않지만 사이트 내에서 둘러볼 수는 있다. 검색어로 입력된 한글 처리에 문제가 있는 것으로 보이는데 곧 해결될 것으로 생각된다.

물론 일반 PC에서도 사용할 수 있다.
